All over Italy in search of the Night Witchers The
first Italian Little Owl Night was held in 2003. Only two places were
involved: Bariano (Bergamo District) and Monza (Milan District), both in
Northern Italy. This year, the VI edition of this European event is going
to put many Italian towns and villages on the map. Conferences,
exhibitions, lectures and - of course - field trips will be on our agenda,
in 23 places, in the following Regions (15 out of 20): Northern Italy: Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Liguria, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna. Central
Italy: Tuscany, The Marches, Latium. Southern
Italy: Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily (the southernmost
European place this year), Sardinia. Several
landscapes are going to be the scenery for the Little Owl people: towns,
urban parks, rivers and woods,
rural and urban ares. The
Italian Little Owl Group (GIC Gruppo Italiano Civette, founded in 2003) is
coordinating the happening. GIC has created a net all over Italy, covering
many Regions. Many
Italian experts will introduce us to the magic world of the Night Witchers:
the Owls. Many aspects will be dealt with: biology and ecology, our
population, habitats, calls, tracks and signs mitology and anthropology.
All the participants will be given the opportunity to hear the sounds of
the nocturnal raptors, to touch pellets, to see feathers and plumes.
Dinners and night tea breaks, events for kids will be organized. A special event will be on March 18 in Monza. Marco Mastrorilli will present his book "La civetta in Italia" (The Little Owl in Itay). The book is coming out in a couple of weeks.
